Thanks for your patience while I returned to Dallas from Philly. In an odd twist, I watched last night’s World Series game with the great Olympian Carl Lewis and the cast of MTV’s “Jackass.” Exactly how I drew it up. But more on that at a later date.
Let’s look back at Sunday’s game from a Giants perspective — as painful as that might be for some of you guys — and see where it all went wrong. I noticed that Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger did something similar earlier today. He actually gave out some game balls, which must have been pretty challenging. Garafolo singled out defensive end Osi Umenyiora and tight end Kevin Boss for their competitive fire in a 40-17 loss.
It’s hard to know where to start when criticizing the Giants’ defense, so let’s go with coordinator Bill Sheridan. When you’re getting gashed in the running game by Leonard Weaver and LeSean McCoy, you have to come up with something. It looked like Giants defenders were confused much of the time and there’s no excuse for that. Sheridan has to come up with a better plan against the Chargers.
And could someone please get C.C. Brown off the field. I thought he was pretty suspect when he played for the Texans, but he’s really getting exposed. On DeSean Jackson‘s 54-yard touchdown, Brown just never caught on that he needed to move over to the right side of the field. Jackson’s a lethal player, but you don’t need to help him out.
I’m hearing a lot of grumbling that Eagles tight end Brent Celek may have been holding defensive end Justin Tuck on Weaver’s 41-yard touchdown run. Well, that gives Tuck an excuse. But what about all the other defenders who were blown off the ball. It’s not like the Eagles have one of the best offensive lines in the league.
This is the first time since early in the ’07 season where I feel like coach Tom Coughlin is completely stumped. I think he was shocked by his team’s flat performance against the Eagles. There’s an utter lack of speed on defense right now and that’s only going to get nominally better with the return of Chris Canty and Michael Boley. By the way, has anyone seen Aaron Ross?
I’m not ready to write off the Giants, but a loss to the Chargers could send me in that direction. Looks like they got fat and happy while playing the dregs of the league. Now they’re spitting the bit against the good teams.

Trash Talk: The Cowboys visit the Eagles on Sunday. Both teams are 5-2. It is not only a clash of NFC East rivals, it is also a match of franchises that seem to get a great deal of attention in exchange for relatively little return.
